Q (raitank) : What is it in video, cinema or any field that excites your curiosity the most right now?

A (Mr.Petty) : I am very interested in what digital film could bring to broadcast and live production and while URSA Mini Pro is a fantastic digital film camera, because it has features that only broadcasters had on their cameras in the past, what’s exciting to me is what happens the other way around.

What happens when a broadcaster gets a digital film camera that works like a broadcast camera and they can start bringing digital film workflows into broadcast. DaVinci Resolve is free so can broadcast bring in a new generation of colorist and do work never seen before? Its hard to know for sure what will happen as this change will be lead by customers but thats exciting! In the unknown there is innovation!

Q : Do you ever consider stepping into lense, or cine lense manufacturing business? (Because that seems to be the only thing lacking in your product lineup.)

A : I don’t think so. I do think that ENG lenses are very expensive and I don’t understand why there is not better Micro Four Thirds lenses available. I don’t know why the lens market seems to be quite slow and adapting to change, however as a company we are more interested in being an enabler for change and then we can hope that other companies can find ways of benefiting from that change and release new products while improving quality.

Q : Since the introduction of URSA, no camera came bundled with the impactful keyword, ‘Cinema Camera”. Does this imply you are now more focused on TV and other fields?

A : In many ways our latest camera include all the features of the old Cinema Camera models. When we first started, we did not really build cameras and our focus was not really building a camera. What we were trying to do was introduce more people into color correction and to try and increase the role of color correction as we thought it could be a creative revolution if more people used it.

However the problem is even with a free of charge DaVinci Resolve, there was still a “class divide” between people who could afford excitedly expensive digital film cameras and everyone else who had to use video cameras. You just cannot color grade video cameras because the blacks and whites in the images are clipped and so the images still look bad. Color grading video cameras is like the old “tape to tape” grades colorists had to do in the old days.

So in many ways our original cameras were more DaVinci Resolve accessories that were designed to make shooting wide dynamic range digital film images as easy and as low cost as possible. Including the EF lens mount, simple ProRes file formats, high quality RAW and build in metadata on a software based touch screen was quite a change to how things were done.

However while these early cameras really did change production and promote the use of color correction, we still had the issue of building a professional camera. The traditional customers loved what we were doing but they wanted a professional camera that just worked like the camera they use professionally. We had solved most of the technical changes so they wanted us to solve the design problem of a professional camera.

Our main focus was to keep the affordability so we had to do a lot of work in our manufacturing and supply changes to get improvements in efficiency and thats allowed us to design and release a camera as complex as the URSA Mini Pro at the price it is. We are continuing to make big improvements as there is more than can be done.

Q : ‘URSA’ (female bear?) is a difficult product name to grasp an image as a high-end camera for us, non-English speakers. What was the intention or spirit behind the name?

A : I did not know URSA was a bear! In reality URSA was a powerful imaging brand that we inherited from Cintel and it was used for telecine. We thought it had a nice heritage in imaging from its film industry days and we thought it would be respectful to use it in a newer age of digital film imaging and cameras. Its well known by customers who have been in the industry for a long time.

Q : Tell us a bit about your next move. What is the future vision of Blackmagic Design?

A : I am never sure of the answer to this question and that is the question that keeps me awake at night. I often wake up in the middle of the night and have an idea then cannot sleep. So I have to get up and do some work just so I can then get it out of my system! I used to see people in television do the same thing and they would have a creative idea and then get excited and come into work tired the next day because it kept them awake. I do worry that with the tools being more affordable people can just wake up and start working on an idea now right from home!

But the general direction we will go can be confusing. Often we work in products that just don’t work out and become too expensive or cannot be done without a technical change and more work. We even had a product on an IBC booth 3 years ago that had to be pulled off the show floor the day before the show when we realized there was a problem with the workflow and it needed more work.

So the future can be unpredictable. It’s hard to know for sure what product will work out and what ones won’t. However what I do know is we will just keep working hard and trying to impress our customers and give them more creative options. If we can keep doing that then the future will be exciting for both ourselves and the customers we hope!
